The James Monroe Library Program

The following are the main goals of the library program at James Monroe Middle School:

1-To promote the love of reading and literature.

2-To teach library usage in order to help students become lifelong learners.

To encourage the love of reading the library sponsors The Battle of the Books Club. The students are encouraged to read the books on the Battle of the Books list. As they finish reading a book the student comes to the library and takes a short quiz on the book. The Battle of the Books Club meets every Wednesday after school. This club prepares for the Battle of the Books Competition in April

The library program at James Monroe Middle School also promotes lifelong learning skills for students. In the sixth grade a series of introductory lessons are taught to the students. Also, students are taught how to do an Athena search, sort the search and then make the search into a bibliography. They are also taught about reference books and other library resources such as BigChalk. This is an APS sponsored database that indexes magazines, newpapers, books, references sources, media, etc. This is a great resource that students may use for research reports, information, and fun.

The use of technology greatly enhances this program:

1. Automated circulation makes a library more user friendly.

2. Athena provides a complete computer catalog of all library books.

3. The use of computer CD-ROMS helps students do research using dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs, Guinness Book of World Records, etc.

4. The Internet in the library provides students with information from all over the world.

5. Networking in the school provides each classroom access to the library catalog.

Program Evaluation

These goals are evaluated when the students complete research reports. Literature skills are evaluated on the amount of books circulated as well as the participation in special reading projects.
